El ultrasonido tiene más de 50 años de uso en la práctica médica y desde hace algunos años fue dado en este terreno un gran salto tecnológico realmente importante, el cual abrió el camino para la llamada Ecografía Avanzada. Un especialista en el tema, Vicepresidente de la World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, (WFUMB) 2006-2009 y Presidente de la Federación Latinoamericana de Sociedades de Ultrasonido (FLAUS), 2001-2003; es el Dr. Leandro Fernández, quien a través de su labor y desarrollo de estas novedosas técnicas, coloca a Venezuela a la vanguardia del Ultrasonido Diagnóstico.
BREVE RESEÑA HISTORICA DE FLAUS, FEDERACION LATINOAMERICANA DE ULTRASONIDO
La FLAUS fue fundada en 1983, durante el Primer Congreso Latinoamericano de Ultrasonido realizado en la ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina, con la intención de invitar a todas las Sociedades Nacionales de la comunidad latinoamericana y a los médicos asociados que trabajaban en ultrasonido médico, a unir esfuerzos para la divulgación y educación en este campo. La idea fue propuesta por el Dr. Ricardo Parada (Uruguay) y bien aceptada por la comunidad de ecosonografistas de aquella época.
La organización está conformada por 13 miembros de todo el continente: Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, México, Paraguay, Perú, República Dominicana y Venezuela.
Durante estas más de tres décadas la FLAUS ha organizado dieciocho exitosos congresos en los diversos países que integran a la Federación y fue además Sociedad Anfitriona del VII Congreso de la Federación Mundial de Ultrasonido en Medicina y Biología, realizado en la Argentina en 1997 y del XIV Congreso Mundial realizado en Sao Paulo, Brasil en 2018, siendo los Presidentes de este evento el Dr. Leandro Fernández (Venezuela) y el Dr. Giovanni Guido Cerri (Brasil) La FLAUS promueve programas de educación y congresos de ultrasonido en los países afiliados y mantiene una estrecha relación con la World Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, a través de sus delegados en el Directorio y en las diversas Comisiones.
BREVE RESUMEN DE LA EXPERIENCIA PROFESIONAL DEL DR. LEANDRO FERNANDEZ
El Dr. Fernández es Director del Laboratorio de Ecografía Avanzada del Instituto Médico La Floresta en Caracas, Venezuela y Profesor de Física y Aplicaciones Clínicas del Ultrasonido Doppler en SonoImagen-JUREI, la cual está afiliada al Instituto Jefferson de Investigación y Educación de Ultrasonido de la Universidad Thomas Jefferson, Filadelfia, Estados Unidos. Completó el Internado de Postgrado en Cardiología y Medicina Interna en 1982 y su Maestría en Medicina Interna en 1986, en la Universidad Central de Venezuela.
Las principales áreas de experiencia con el ultrasonido del Dr. Fernández son nefro-urología y neurovascular. Se convirtió en uno de los pioneros de la sonografía 3-D en América Latina (según el Smithsonian Institute, EE. UU., en History of Medical Ultrasound, CD Edition, 2003) y ha estado trabajando con 3DUS desde 1997, con especial dedicación a Aplicaciones No Gineco-Obstétricas, enfocadas a abdomen, pequeñas partes y vascular.
El Dr. Fernández está afiliado a varias sociedades científicas. Ha sido galardonado con importantes premios y reconocimientos, como Miembro Honorario del Instituto Americano de Ultrasonido en Medicina, AIUM y Miembro Honorario de las Sociedades de Ultrasonido de Chile, República Dominicana, Ecuador y Perú. Recibió la Medalla de Oro de la Federación Latinoamericana de Sociedades de Ultrasonido, FLAUS.
El Dr. Fernández ha sido muy activo en WFUMB, Federación Mundial para actividades de Ultrasonido en Medicina y Biología desde 2003. Ha ocupado varios puestos en el Consejo de WFUMB, tales Vicepresidente 2 y 1. Fue Presidente del Congreso Mundial WFUMB 2013 , São Paulo, Brasil. Actualmente, es Director Regional de Educación de WFUMB América Latina. Además, el Dr. Fernández es Presidente del Programa Latinoamericano de Certificación en Ultrasonido de APCA / Inteleos. El Dr. Fernández es un destacado conferencista con más de 380 conferencias y facilitaciones en numerosos eventos científicos en todo el mundo, invitado por todas las Federaciones y Sociedades de Ultrasonido afiliadas a WFUMB en Estados Unidos, Europa, Asia, África, Australia y América Latina.

A specialist in the subject, Vice-President of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) 2006-2009 and President of the Latin American Federation of Ultrasound Societies (FLAUS) 2001-2003, is Dr. Leandro Fernández, who through his work and development of these new techniques, places Venezuela at the forefront of Diagnostic Ultrasound.
BRIEF HISTORY OF FLAUS, LATIN AMERICAN FEDERATION OF ULTRASOUND
FLAUS was founded in 1983, during the First Latin American Congress on Ultrasound held in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, with the intention of inviting all the National Societies of the Latin American community and associated physicians working in medical ultrasound to join efforts for the dissemination and education in this field. The idea was proposed by Dr. Ricardo Parada (Uruguay) and well accepted by the sonographers community at the time.
The organization is made up of 13 members from all over the continent: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE OF DR. LEANDRO FERNANDEZ
Dr. Fernandez is Director of the Laboratory of Advanced Sonography at Instituto Medico La Floresta in Caracas, Venezuela and Professor of Physics and Clinical Applications of Doppler Ultrasound at SonoImagen-JUREI, which is affiliated to Jefferson Ultrasound Research and Education Institute, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, USA. He completed the Post Graduated Internship in Cardiology and Internal Medicine in 1982 and MSc in Internal Medicine in 1986 at Universidad Central de Venezuela.
Dr. Fernandez’s primary areas of ultrasound experience are Nephro-Urology and Neurovascular. He became one of the pioneers of the 3-D sonography in Latin America (according to the Smithsonian Institute, USA, on History of Medical Ultrasound, CD Edition, 2003) and has been working with 3DUS since 1997, with a special dedication to non-Ob/Gyn applications, focused on Abdomen, Small Parts and Vascular.
Dr. Fernandez is affiliated with several scientific societies. He has been the recipient of important awards and recognitions such as Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and Honorary Member from the Societies of Ultrasound of Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Peru. He received the Medal of the Latin American Federation of Societies of Ultrasound, FLAUS. Dr. Fernandez has been very active in WFUMB, World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology activities since 2003. He has served in many positions on the Board of WFUMB, such as Vice President 2 and 1. He was President of the World Congress WFUMB 2013, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Currently, he is WFUMB Latin America Regional Director of Education. In addition, Dr. Fernandez is Chairman of the Latin American Certification Program of APCA/Inteleos. Dr. Fernandez is a Keynote Speaker with more than 380 lectures and facilitation of numerous meetings around the World, invited by all WFUMB affiliated Federations and Ultrasound Societies of USA, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and Latin America.
