AVUM (Venezuelan Association of Medical Ultrasound)
GETS CERTIFIED AS WORLD CENTER OF EXCELLENCE IN ULTRASOUND
February the 6th of 2005, was an extraordinary day for our Association since as part of annual meeting of the Executive Committee of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, WFUMB, and thanks to the efforts of Dr. Leandro Fernandez (Chief Administrative WFUMB and Member of the Education Committee) Venezuela was recognized as World Centre of Excellence in Ultrasound through the AVUM (Venezuelan Association of Medical Ultrasound). The certification of the AVUM was held at the Four Points by Sheraton in Panama City. After completing all the requirements the documents were signed and confirmed by Dr. Marvin Ziskin, President WFUMB; Dr. Hiroki Watanabe, Director of the Committee of Centers of Excellence WFUMB; Dr. Peter Unshelm, President of AVUM, and Dr. Leandro Fernandez, Secretary of the Center of Excellence WFUMB Venezuela. As witnesses of the event were Dr. Byung Ihn Choi, Vice-President 1 WFUMB; Michel Claudon, Vice-President 2 WFUMB; Stanley Barnett, Secretary WFUMB; Peter N. Wells, Editor in Chief of the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology and Soren Hancke, Editor of Echoes magazine.
It should be noted that Venezuela is the third country in the World and unique in Latin America who joins this program to be recognized by WFUMB. Previously, World Centers of Excellence were created in 2004 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Asia and Kampala, Uganda in Africa.
The distinguished colleagues Watanabe, Choi, and Barnett will be speakers during ECOMED 2005 (Venezuelan Congress of Ultrasound in Medicine), at the same time WFUMB will be installing the Center of Excellence in our country.
The constancy and perseverance in organizing events of high scientific level, the regular publication of our journal “Ultrasound in Medicine” and the important role of many National and International Members of AVUM, allowed the WFUMB to make this important recognition not only to our Society but also to FLAUS (Latin American Federation of Ultrasound Societies). We are proud to receive this unique distinction and share with the rest of the Ultrasound Societies affiliated to FLAUS and its representative on the Board of WFUMB, Dr. Leandro Fernandez.
Leandro Fernandez, MD.
